Dustin: A New Dublin Film

At the Philly Film Festival I saw a wonderful new film, a musical about the tender relationship that unfolds between a Dublin street musician and a Czech pianist, entitled ONCE. It won the
audience award at Sundance this year. Shot on a single handheld video camera in available light, the film has a raw, realistic quality that emphasizes both the grittiness and beauty of Dublin. The story is very simple (we never even learn the characters’ names), but the film has an emotional depth and easy charm that leaves one with the feeling he/she has experienced something quite meaningful. And the music, by stars Markéta Irglová and Glen Hansard (of the awesome Irish rock band The Frames), is incredibly beautiful. It’s easy to see why the film has garnered so much early acclaim.

The film opens theatrically in May. I highly recommend it.
