One of the things I love about Ireland is their relaxed nature in regard to almost everything. Yes, in some instances this is bad, but in others it is amazing by comparison. For example, the children in Ireland run wild because the kidnapping rate is so low. People are also allowed to drink at a younger age (which personally I agree with – the less of a “taboo” something is, the less likely people are to abuse it), not to mention carry their alcohol around with them in the streets without the obligatory brown-paper or black-plastic bag covering we have come to know and love in the states.
This sense of relaxation also carries over into Irish media, of all forms. As I sit here I am watching a tampon commercial which features a woman in thong underwear walking away from the camera. Upon opening an Irish newspaper I was greeted by a paparazzi shot of topless woman giving some random man a back massage. Our visit to the RTE television studio just further proved this point. The president of public relations, Mr. Feeney, told us that they do try to tell people ahead of time to curb their language while on camera. However, it is such a part of Irish heritage to let the ‘F’ word fly that sometimes they just have to let their guests curse. I have also since read movie reviews containing the word “f**k”. I have become so accustomed to this more relaxed way of being that returning to the stodgy states is bound to cause me a bit of culture shock.
