Despite our delight at the humorous warning labels, Ireland is not laughing. They are the first country in all of Europe who have enforced the ban on smoking. The current fine for smoking in a restaurant or pub is €3,000. A study done has shown that roughly 40% of people said that this ban would effect whether they would go out for a pint if made to stand outside to smoke. The owners are trying to be as accomidating as possible, providing designated outdoor areas to smoke, which are heated and supplied with ashtrays a-plenty. There are pome pub owners are hoping this ban will bring a whole new type of crowd out to pubs. Also to be taken into consideration is the British control over Northern Ireland. Northern pub owners are hoping that those close enough will make the journey north to be able to sit and enjoy their pint while also being able to smoke inside their establishments.
