Liz: The Brian Boru Harp

Above is the Brian Boru harp found at Trinity College, this harp is one of the most common symbols found in Ireland. Not only is the harp of Brian Boru depicted on every Guinness glass, bottle, and advertisement; but it is also used as Ireland’s coat of arms, Ireland’s symbol on the Euro coin, and as a symbol of the Free State of Ireland since 1922. Everywhere one looks in Ireland, it is easy to spot the Brian Boru harp whether you are in a pub, at a Memorial Garden or simply walking around the heart of Dublin. There is one slight difference between the Ireland Coat of Arms and the Guinness logo. That is Guinness points the harp to the left, and Ireland points the harp to the right. That difference only appeared after the new Irish Republic was formed and wanted to take back the symbol of the Brian Boru harp. Guinness refused to dispose of their logo, but agreed to switch the harp around so as to distance Guinness from the Irish Republic.
