Sometimes partaking of the Guinness can lead to, well, pacts of great foolishness. This is what happened to Tony Hawks, a British comedian who one night had a bit too much of the black stuff, and found himself making a drunken bet that he could hitchhike around the perimeter of Ireland in less than a month with a refrigerator in tow. Yes, a fridge.
From this incredibly loopy premise comes the travelogue "Round Ireland with a Fridge." I just finished reading it, and I wanted to bring it to your attention because it is an excellent piece of travel writing, and a beautiful look at Ireland and its people. Full of humor and wry observation, as well as wonderful anecdotal storytelling about Hawks' misadventures (at various points, he goes surfing with the fridge, takes it on a helicopter, meets a bonafide king, and becomes a huge Irish media celebrity).
Above all, the book demonstrates the colorful character and open hearts of the Irish people. Hawks' story tells of a culture of people who live life to the fullest. It's a quick and entertaining read, check it out.
